Abstract

One of the most important parameters to determine the thickness of road pavement in the condition of the subgrade soil as reflected by the CBR values. Poor subgrade soils exhibit low CBR values resulting in the requirement for thick pavement layers, and therefore high cost. One of the methods to enhance the quality of insitu soil to be used as subgrade material is lime and rice husk. In this study a series of laboratory CBR tests were conducted on soil samples obtained from Seropan village, Gunung Kidul, to investigate the effect of lime and rice husk additives on the CBR values of the soil. Soil samples treated with lime and rice husk were prepared with lime contents varying between 3% and 18% (increment of 3%) and rice husk between 2 % and 12% (increment of 2%). All samples were subjected to a curing time of 3 days after mixing prior to compaction and CBR testing. Two CBR samples were prepared for each combination of lime and rice husk contents, one for a CBR test without prior immersion and the other subjected to prior immersion. The test result showed that for the pre-immersed samples, a lime content of 6% and rise husk of 4% produced the highest increase in the CBR value from 16.29% for untreated soil to 23.66%.
