Abstract

Hydraulic jump occures when a flow moves from sub-critical phase to sritical phase, on to supercritical phase and back to sub-critical flow condition. In an open channel, hydraulic jump can be observed when a flow passes s sluice gate. The nature of the hydraulic jump is influenced by the velocity of the flow, which affects the length as well as the height of the jump. This research studied the characteristic of hydraulic jump water flow at a sluice gate installed in an open channel of the hydraulic lab of Universitas Kristen Immanuel, Yogyakarta. The channel has a width of 29 cm and height of 27 cm. the opening of the sluice was made to vary at 1.5 cm, 2.5 cm, 3.5 cm, 4.5 cm, and 5.5 cm. Discharge was measured by manually collecting the water in a bucket at a certain intervals of time as well as by Thomson discharge measuring device. The length and height of the hydraulic jump were recorded foe each flow velocity and sluice gate opening. In each experiment care was taken to keep the discharge of water constant to ease the observation of the hydraulic jump. The experiments showed that for each flow condition Froude number varied with sluice gate opening. For instance, a sluice gate opening of 1.5 cm produced a Froude number of 163 while for an opening of 2.5 cm, the same number was 1.14. Froude number obtained from the different sluice gate openings were used to analyze the height and length of the hydraulic jump in each flow condition and it was discovered that these were different from what were observed in the real flow situation in the lab. The only exception was for the flow passed through a sluice gate opening of 1.5 cm where the result of the analysis was close to the measurements of the hydraulic jump. Aside from the sluice gate opening, the characteristic of the hydraulic jump and whether a hydraulic jump would be occurring or not was also determined by the flow velocity.
